Hi guys,
Ill try to keep this one short. I want to know how you guys feel about this and how you would have handled the situation. At the begining of the week I wrote notes in the integrated notes. I forgot where the PHYSIO stickers were so I wrote in the colum physio where the sticker should be affixed with the plan to go and ask my supervisor where the notes are. Things came up and I forgot to ask her. Later on that day she read the notes and realized I hadn't put a sticker on it. She made a big deal of this, didn't give me a chance to explain and then went on to say "I don't want to keep nagging you like this, nagging is what we do to primary school kids" Essentially she was calling me a primary school kid. Obviously she made me feel like I was 1 foot tall. I didn't say anything back becuase if my last prac taught me anything; it is to keep your mouth shut!! I don't feel that this is right and we shouldn't be scared of defending ourselves because of fear of failing the prac. Anyways, how would you guys have handled the situation?
Hope everybody's prac is going well!!

hi Shadi.
Your right we shouldn't be scared of defending ourselves but know exactly what you mean. Keep my mouth shut or have my supervisor hate me for the rest of the prac for standing up for myself?
I have done the exact same thing (but my supervisor told me to do it!) and no-body was offended - I made sure that I wrote physio in red pen and put a big red box around it and at the top made sure (in Capitols)S/B PYSIO STUDENT could clearly be seen.
I think it was a little harsh of your supervisor to say that, no-one should be made to feel like that, and she should have let you explain yourself, and if your still worried about it next week then you should tell her. Keeping it in is only going to get you angry and your supervisor will pick up on that. She might actually respect you telling her!
Good luck
Hi Shadi, I think you'll find most of us have been in your situation at one time or another. I've been in many situations where I haven't been given a chance to explain why I did something. I've also been in others where if you try to rationalise your Rx or actions you are called defensive so it's a very fine line.
It depends on your supervisor a lot. If you are given time to explain yourself the best thing to do is 1. Agree with them and say that you can see where they are coming from 2. Apologise for it happening 3. If you hadn't been told by this point, ask where the stickers are for future reference 4. If you are able to say that you couldn't find the stickers and thought the best action in the interim would be to write Physio in there and finally 5. Ask what they would like you to do in the future if this situation arises again. Even after this they may still call you defensive but you've done everything you can.
I think it was very harsh and unprofessional of your supervisor to resort to what amounts to name calling. It's certainly not what I would expect.
I was once advised by my curtin tutor to keep in mind the amount of time until I left this placement as a way of dealing with a harsh supervisor - it helped a bit.
Good luck, I always found it best to tell someone about these issues. They can really get to you overtime so try to put it out of your mind once it is dealt with.
Sorry for how long this is.
Hi Shadi,
How’s it going? I have to say, I’m pretty surprised that your supervisor made such a big deal over what seems like a minor incident! Did she give you a reason why it was so important you use a sticker rather than writing physio? I’d be interested to hear if there is actually a reason why we should use a sticker because I did exactly what you did on my last prac a few times when there were no stickers around, but my supervisor didn’t say anything about it. I think if she had made a big deal about it and I had been in the same situation as you were, I would have politely questioned her reasoning as well as mentioned that I had planned on placing a sticker in the notes, but it had slipped my mind. It is a tough call whether or not to keep your mouth shut so you don’t get on the bad side of your supervisor or whether to speak up for yourself, but you were not in the wrong at all, as far as I’m concerned, so I think I would have spoke up for myself. You do also have to consider your supervisor’s personality as well though. If she is a supervisor whom you already know wouldn’t respond well to being questioned or to you defending your actions, I may actually keep my mouth shut. I would definitely make a comment on the assessment form at the end of the prac though. We are trying to learn and build our confidence so we can enter into our physio careers on a strong note and our supervisors are there to guide us. She is not going to be effective if she continues to make her students feel like they’re a foot tall over such simple and minute incidents.
